In 1998 Matt Miller, from Sydney, Australia, was studying for his PhD in Analytical Chemistry. Part of his study was to investigate how to remove heavy metals from contaminated soil using plants (phytoremediation). After about a month or so, his wife Carmen noticed the hair on his lower arms and hands had mysteriously vanished. On further investigation, Matt discovered that certain purified plant extracts naturally reduced the concentration of nutrients inside the hair follicle and formed a barrier between the sides of the follicle and the hair. This lead to the hair becoming softer, lighter in colour and with regular use, the hair permanently stopped growing!
